AB - It is with great sadness that we convey the news of the passing away of our esteemed Board member Daniel Cunningham in March. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Dan began his career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where he also served as Managing Partner, moved to Allen & Overy in 2001 to become Senior Partner in the A&O New York office and, after 33 years as a transactional lawyer, joined Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan as a litigation partner, where he spent the last decade of his practice involved in some of the highest profile, complex financial product cases arising in that period. Dan was a first and obvious choice when Capital Markets Law Journal created its Advisory Board. One of the original drafters of the ISDA Master Agreement, Dan was viewed by many of us as the doyen of US derivatives lawyers. He was a truly recognized international market expert in law and finance, and we always welcomed and respected his views. Dan’s legal career was distinguished by his leadership and effectiveness—a powerful combination of intelligence, practicality and personality. However, Dan also loved life and was, quite simply, bigger than life. Legal pioneer, mentor, role model, bon vivant, lover of sport and loyal friend, Daniel Cunningham will be greatly missed by his CMLJ colleagues.
