She earned her doctorate in folklore and comparative literature from Indiana University and came to Dartmouth in 1984 from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Elaine had a broad range of professional interests, although she was best known for her fieldwork on the Standing Rock Reserva- tion and her publications on American Indian culture, literature, and linguistics. Her teaching for Native American Studies at Dartmouth focused on American Indian literature. Illness interrupted her writing and teaching in 2001 although Elaine continued to work on her manuscripts during the final weeks of her illness.
