I. Kolupaev, and A. M. Kudryatsev The present stage of development of the chemical industry is characterized by introduc- tion of versatile automated productions making extensive use of microprocessor-controlled apparatuses, industrial robots, and other devices functioning as relatively autonomous tech- nological modules of automatic control systems [I]. The Tambov Institute of Chemical Machinery has been working on the development of auto- mated installations for continuous production of azo dyes making use of the principles of versatile production systems. The urgency of this work stems from the fact that the produc- tion of azo dyes account for half the total production of known dyes. The azo dye production process consists of the following successive stages: preparation of initial components, diazotization of aromatic amines, azo coupling, filtration, drying, and dispersal of the dry dye. Let us examine the technological process on the example of production of red pigment (Fig. i). Hydrochloric acid suspension of amine A and aqueous solution of sodium nitrite N are fed by pumps concurrently and continuously into the diazoti- zation apparatus i.
