During the past 15 years numerous articles have discussed the "leukemoid 1, reaction" in various diseases 2,3,4,5,6 j ^ vague and indistinct category n ms have been placed a variety of blood pictures whose true nature is still unknown. Th e reaction described has been of two distinc t varieties; in one th e tota l white count ha s been either normal or slightly increased, bu t smears of th e periphera l blood disclosed th e presence of large number s of myelocyte s and myeloblasts ; in th e othe r type of reaction th e total count has bee n extremely elevated with or withou t any marke d degree of a shift t o th e left on th e par t of th e poly nuclea r cells. In bot h of these types, th e bone marrow ha s in all instances shown the absence of a true leukemia, hence the designation "leu­ kemoid.
