Film can he used as an alternative, but is usually too expensive for long records. The drive, which is taken from a 4 H.P., D.C. motor via a variahle speed gear-box, is controlled 1)y an electromagnetic clutch in the camera. The inertia of the moving parts in the camcrii has been so reduced that the time taken to accelerate the paper to the maximum speed of z m./sec. is in the order of 0.1 sec. When the clutch circuit is opened, the papcr comes to rest in a similar period. Thus useful records less than 0.5 m. long can be taken in succession, or records of any length up to a maximum of 20 m. As the paper is exposed, it passes into a light-tight container which cuts off the paper and can he removed to carry the record to the dark room. Spare containers can be provided so that the records can he taken in rapid succession without waiting for develop- ment.
