He is a senior director and attorney of the oldest specialist IP law firm in South Africa, namely D M Kisch Incorporated having its offices in Sandton (Johannesburg) and in Pretoria.This article presents a broad outline of recent developments in respect of the protection of traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) and certain related matters in South Africa (and in other countries in southern Africa).The article provides some history and background to various developments in South Africa including a protracted struggle by government to provide protection for TK/TCEs as various species of intellectual property.The article reports on and discusses a newly assented Act of the National Assembly, that incorporates TK/TCEs into certain IP Acts by amending those Acts.
