TY - JOUR AU - Roth, Laurence AB - We have devised a system that will allow the optical sensing of high temperatures associated with the onset of optical fiber burnback, allowing immediate shuttering of the laser source. The shutter is triggered by an amplified signal obtained from the detected blackbody radiation that propagates back through the same fiber used to deliver the therapeutic laser energy. We will present some theory on the burnback phenomenon, describe the experimental setup used and discuss the results obtained.
