INTRODUCTION This article is written chiefly from the point of view of a service culture collection and is restricted largely to the part played by culture collections in the interchange of bacterial cultures and bacteriological information between scientists, and of the relations between culture collections and their organization at national and international levels. The internal management of culture collections and the preservation of fungi are discussed in A. H. S. Onions’ paper. The operation of the National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC) and the National Collection of Industrial Bacteria and the methods used for the preservation of bacteria are given in Lapage et. al. (1970aJ). Culture collections and their management have been reviewed by Martin (1963), Martin (1964) and Clark& Loegering (1967).
