Hynes Florida Technological University Orlando, Florida 32816 CUBES IN EGG CARTONS Directions for Teachers Goal: Students need drill in of skills many aspects algebraic but the "drudg- ery" of it makes them reluctant to participate unless forced or required. This activity could provide a more enjoyable drill setting; more thus, positive attitudes will be developed while abase for different mathematical growth is provided. Objective: The student will substitute numerals for variables in an open sentence and obtain numerical values for those sentences. Grade Level: Beginning Algebra. Materials: Marking pencil, egg carton, cube (small enough to move around in an egg carton). Procedures: The student should make his own apparatus. This provides initial familiarity with the materials; thus, each student gains some expectations about the activity. The cube must move freely to all holes within egg so cartons with flat are the carton, smooth, tops preferred. Comments: You should provide the students with a list of open sentences, which and them none of are equivalent, let pick the ones they prefer. The degree of difficulty of this activity can easily be varied by altering the open sentence or variables.
