Beyond the time threshold of human vision lies a world of rapid motion which can be seen only with the aid of accessories that manipulate time as the microscope or telescope manipulates space. Harold Edgerton and his associates, Kenneth Germeshausen and Herbert Grief, designed lighting equipment tot providing either a single tlash for taking a single "still'" picture, or a series of flashes with a predetermined interval of time between them for taking multiple-exposure photographs and motion pictures. Edgerton is first and fl~remost a scientist and engineer. When he devised the modern stroboscope, he was not trying to become a photographer: he was trying to find a way to solve an engineering problem. Throughout his career he has invented new photographic systems as tools to solve problems.
