AB - American Anthropologist [65, 19631 Armouries, London, is a rack of 20 or more flintlock sporting rifles by Henry Tatham (London, 1820-40) which were made for presentation to friendly chieftains amongst the Canadian Indians. In the 1840’s the flintlock gave way to a shorter weapon of large caliber like the Hawken half-stocked, percussion-lock muzzle loader. This was the favored gun until the advent of the big-bore breechloaders by Sharps, Remington, and B allar d . The gun trade, its place in the fur trade, and the use of guns by the Indian are obviously subjects which concern the historian. The present studies give an excellent account of the kinds of firearms used by the Indians and of their places of origin. The complete trade gun is rarely found, hence the authors have dealt thoroughly with all the elements of a gun: gun barrels and bullets; locks and lock plates; side plates; butt plates and miscellaneous gun furniture; and trigger guards. These studies emphasize the importance of properly treating rusted gun parts which can often yield valuable information concerning the types of firearms that were in use at a specific military post at a particular time.
