Stephen AB - IMMUNOLOGICAL REACTIONS OF ELEMENTARY BODIES AND OF VIRUS FREE FILTRATES FROM MYXOMA INFECTED CHICK MEMBRANES WITH HYPER LMMUNE RABBIT SERUM RACHEL E. HOFFSTADT AND K. STEPHEN PILCHER From the Department of Bacteriology, University of Washington, Seattle The association of minute coccoid bodies with a virus was first noted in 1906 by Paschen! in vaccinia. This was confirmed later by Ledingham and Eagle,2,3 Caraigie" and Parker and Rivers.! The virus and the elementary bodies were found in suspensions of the rabbit dermal pulp and in filtrates 2,3.4 from the pulp of vaccinal lesions. Ledingharn" and Parker and Rivers" demonstrated that serum from animals immunized with vaccinia virus agglutinated vaccinia elementary bodies. The latter workers also found in the serum of animals suffering from infections with vaccinia virus and in the virus free filtrates of dermal pulp of vaccinated animals a soluble antigenic substance which gave precipitins with hyperimmune serum. Smadel and Wall" prepared highly infectious suspensions of vaccinia elementary bodies from infected chorio-allantoic membranes of developing chick embryos which agglutinated with specific hyperimmune serum. The soluble antigen characteristic of vaccinia was also found in virus free filtrates from infected membranes. Later a sufficient quantity of elementary bodies were recovered by TI - Immunological Reactions of Elementary Bodies and of Virus Free Filtrates from Myxoma Infected Chick Membranes with Hyper-Immune Rabbit Serum JF - The Journal of Infectious Diseases DO - 10.1093/infdis/65.2.103 DA - 1939-09-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/oxford-university-press/immunological-reactions-of-elementary-bodies-and-of-virus-free-aeqd2ZFim0 SP - 103 EP - 112 VL - 65 IS - 2 DP - DeepDyve ER -
