TY - JOUR AU - Connell, Sophia M AB - Book Reviews 257 Aristotle on Sexual Dieff rence: Metaphysics, Biology, Politics , by Marguerite Deslauriers. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2022. Pp. vii + 354. This meticulously researched and philosophically sophisticated book provides a comprehensive reassessment of sexual difference in Aristotle, covering m -eta physics, biology and politics, delivering on the promise of its title. The first three chapters cover the views of Aristotle’s predecessors (both literary and philosophical) (Chapter 1), Aristotle’s position on the metaphysics and biology of sex difference (Chapter 2) and his socio-political perspective on it (Chapter 3). The final chapter (Chapter 4) attempts to connect biology to politics, to discover what it is about having a woman’s body for Aristotle that debars a person from political authority. Each section provides detailed interpretations of almost all possibly relevant texts on this theme. The book is a masterful achievement which must be referenced in any serious work in the future on females, women or sex difference in Aristotle. Deslauriers has been instrumental over the last few decades in de-velop ing a philosophically serious reappraisal of Aristotle’s position on women (and slaves) in his Politics. This book provides a more thorough analysis of gender throughout his works.
