That is in itself very welcoming as the historical lens is not often used in the field of leisure studies. The book by Zuzanek consists of two parts. The first part offers an overview of perspectives by great thinkers of the past on the relationship between work and leisure starting from the old Greek and Roman philosophers to scholars like Karl Marx and Max Weber and more recent writers like Johan Huizinga and Hannah Arendt. Part two focuses on contemporary results of surveys on work leisure relationship (and time-use) and its effect on well-being. The value of this book lays certainly in the first part. It offers an often interesting exploration of the contributions by early scholars on the position and value of the societal phenomenon of leisure. It becomes immediately clear that the challenge of turning to history comes with the question what we actually mean TI - Time, Leisure and Well-Being (2021). Routledge, Jiri Zuzanek.
