Kalimantan 37, Jember 68121 Email: bowo_ec.fmipa@unej.ac.id ABSTRACT This research aims to study the characteristics of parallel plate capacitor in its application as a rain gauge instrument based on Arduino with LCD display. This designed device is able to read and display the output voltage, capacitance value, dielectric constant and level of rainfall due to the changing of the composition of dielectric materials between the capacitor plates. The system has been assessed in 3 stages i.e. the accuracy test of read capacitance value, the water level value, and the field validation. The values of sensor capacitance displayed in the LCD are compared to the values of sensor capacitance measured by CM-3300A capacitance meter. In this test we obtained that the results of capacitance values measured by those two different methods are closed aech other. The highest difference is 20.97pF at a water level of 15cm.
