Until its arms sales to the region garnered international headlines in recent years, China was not usually considered a significant actor in the Middle East. In reality, as Calabrese ’s excellent monograph reminds us, China has been very much involved in the region from the mid-1950s, although its influenc has e never been on a par with that of the superpowers. This excellent addition to the small number of books dealing with China and the Middle East is concise ,substantive, and very well balanced within the limits of its predominantly state-orien ted approach. It is based exclusively on western-language sources, except for those Chines e materials available in English translation.
