TY - JOUR AU - Johnson, Tony AB - Ensuring good quality colour reproductions requires regularcalibration of all components in the system. However, this is notsufficient without proper characterisation and control of theprinting press. It is a fundamental tenet of pre-press calibrationthat colour transforms be defined by the press characterisation andsufficient control be implemented to maintain consistent outputusing these transformations. Calibration may, therefore, be thoughtof as a 6 stage process:a) Stabilise and control the printing process. (This isincreasingly becoming "standardised" via specifications suchas SWOP)b) Characterise the press by printing and measuring suitabletest imagesC) Match the proofing system to the press (for both soft andhard copy proofs)d) Stabilise (linearise) input scanners and output recorderse) Define the transformation required to produce high qualityreproduct ionsf) Control scanners and recorders to maintain the transformProcedures are discussed which may be used to achieve thiscalibration process and tools which have recently been developed toassist in this are described.
