The unwary reader may not realize the extent to which Spartan historiography is a morass of contradictions comparable to early Roman or Hebrew history. Jones's recent history of the later Roman Empire is a monument of scholar- (1957) are extremely perceptive, but ship, and his essays on Athenian Democracy Sparta requires a more extensive treatment than he has given it in the present work, which does not reflect his great talents.
