TY - JOUR AU - Harrison, Summer AB - INTERVIEW SUMMER HARRISON Sea Level: An Interview with Linda Hogan Linda Hogan is a Chickasaw novelist, poet, essayist, teacher, and acti- vist known for her commitment to environmental justice. The latest of many honors, she is the recipient of the 2007 Mountains and Plains Booksellers Spirit of the West Literary Achievement Award. This interview came out of a discussion we began at the eighth bien- nial ASLE conference in Victoria, BC. I met with Linda at her house in Oklahoma on a hot afternoon in late July 2009 to talk about her newest novel, People of the Whale, and her current work as a Writer in Residence for the Chickasaw Nation. Set back from a quiet road in a sleepy southern town, her house is bordered by grasses, trees, and a small herb garden. Two mares grazed lazily around the yard, occa- sionally interrupted by her playful dog who, in Linda’s words, “likes to pretend he’s a horse.” She had just returned, as she mentions here, from a conference on religion, nature, and culture in Amsterdam.
