Nor has he cited T. Takeuchi's War and Diplomacy in the Japanese Empire (New York, 1935), which contains carefully documented chapters on Japan's entry into the World War, the negotiations on the Twenty-one Demands, the Siberian expedition, and the Paris Peace Conference, based for the most part on Japanese sources. Professor Takeuchi's study does not alter La Fargue's account of these developments at any important point but does serve to substantiate some of his conclusions more fully. Chang's account of the establishment of the republic and the years im- mediately following is by far more satisfactory than anything available in a Western language, as is likewise his account of Sino-Russian relations after the Russian revolution. His chapter on the Washington Conference, on the other hand, adds little if anything that is new to those acquainted with the Western works on the subject, as he has relied almost entirely upon Western sources. The foregoing criticisms detract little from the inherent worth of these two highly authoritative treatments of a complex and significant period TI - French Indo-China. By Virginia Thompson.
