TY - JOUR AU - McClelland, Roy J. AB - Psychopathology associated with epilepsy arises most commonly in the areas of cognition and personality. Concerning cognitive processing, modern neuroimaging methods offer new opportunities for investigating the relationship between specific processes and brain dysfunction. While the effects of medication must always be kept in mind, present evidence suggests that carbamazepine in therapeutic doses does not impair cognition. Specific disorders and difficulty of personality including psychosexual problems are very much a product of complex interactions between biological and social factors. On the biological side, underlying brain damage and medication have repeatedly been associated with the emergence of psychopathology. On the social side, unemployment, stigma and chronic social disadvantage have now been linked with a range of chronic psychological problems, including low self-esteem, depression and anxiety TI - Psychiatric aspects of epilepsy JF - Current Opinion in Psychiatry DA - 1991-02-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/wolters-kluwer-health/psychiatric-aspects-of-epilepsy-XB4acAY2YO SP - 127–130-127&ndash EP - ndash;130-127–130 VL - 4 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
