TY - JOUR AU - Habu, S. A. AB - The vast quantities of petroleum sludge (PS) generated by oil companies contribute significantly to environmental harm. This sludge is formed during oil extraction, processing, purification, and transport. Due to its composition, which includes spent chemicals, wastewater, waste oil, polluted sand, and mineral substances, petroleum sludge is classified as hazardous waste by the Hazardous Wastes Handling Rules and the Environment Protection Act. The disposal of PS in landfills is prohibited unless it has been completely de-oiled. Treating and disposing of PS poses significant risks to most refineries, making treatment a necessary process. This report offers a comprehensive assessment of PS origins, properties, and environmental impacts, along with a comparative analysis of various thermal and disposal methods for PS treatment. This review could enhance knowledge of PS thermal and disposal methods to inform future guidelines.
