AB - This paper reports an efficient method to measure the phase noise of free‐running microwave voltage‐controlled oscillators using a general‐purpose spectrum analyzer. The system tracks the frequency drifting signal by using a charge pump phase‐locked loop. The measurements taken on a 1.9‐GHz oscillator demonstrates the system accuracy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
