Past The first EGPA conference that I attended was in Vaasa, Finland, in 2001. I had just completed my PhD during the course of which I had read a couple of dozen articles and papers originating from EGPA conferences over the preceding years. I had no idea what exactly what EGPA was nor how it worked and, if I was being honest, I was partially drawn to the conference in the hope of finally putting faces on names of people whose work I had read, scholars like Wim van de Donk, Ignace Snellen, John Taylor and Klaus Lenk, to name but a few. I was also hoping to connect with what, at that time, seemed to be a rather small group of European scholars working in the field of the application of information technology in government. The conference was something of a culture shock. For a start, the participants were predominantly from different sub-disciplines within the field of public administration.
