TY - JOUR AU - Gilchrist, Alison AB - Book Reviews 193 strategies. The arguments are coherent, supported by personal experience and there is an extensive bibliography for those wanting to develop the ideas further. This book is a valuable addition to the literature on child protection and will be particularly useful to those practitioners struggling to understand par- enting behaviour, rather than limiting their involvement to policing as directed by the media. Additionally, there are many practitioners who continue to work with parents who have been found guilty of harming or murdering their children. For them, demonizing parents is a short-sighted and inhumane approach to the complexities of child abuse. When the hue and cry have died down about punish- ing perpetrators and professionals for killing children or allowing it to happen, social workers continue to undertake this very difficult and harrowing work.
