TY - JOUR AU - Unterberger, Betty Miller AB - betty miller unterberger Present at the Creation: Reflections on the Organization and Growth of SHAFR In 1967, the year SHAFR was founded, the Vietnam War was at its height and courses in American foreign relations were full and expanding. The same had been true at Whittier College in 1956, when the Russians launched Sputnik. By 1958, student and community interest had grown so great that in addition to American foreign relations, I introduced a course in Soviet-American relations. From 1961 to 1968, I was teaching at California State University–Fullerton and my classes were always full, not only with students but with faculty and inter- ested persons from the community participating. It was this growth of job opportunities that led to the dedicated efforts of Joseph P. O’Grady to begin an organization which would bring together historians of diplomatic history. Within four months, he enlisted the enthusiastic support of David Pletcher, Alexander DeConde, and Thomas A. Bailey. We met in a crowded non-air- conditioned room at the Palmer House at the annual meeting of the OAH. There were seventy-nine men and one woman. I knew two of the founders well.
