However, over the course of the past decade, a growing number of companies have S pioneered new strategies for integrating the environment into their overall business strategy and for simultaneously improving their environmental and business performance. They are, to turn a phrase, becoming “leaner and greener” at the same time. These companies are motivated not just by altruistic concerns, but by a bottom-line quest to increase profits, productivity, and perfor- mance by reducing waste and emissions. A new three zero manufacturing para- digm is emerging, where companies simultaneously work to achieve zero defects (quality), zero inventory (just-in-time inventory and supplier relations), and zero waste and emissions.
