TY - JOUR AU - Scheffler, Paweł AB - readers respond Grammar and lexis: better safe than sorry Paweł Scheffler ‘Readers respond’ is a forum for individuals to contribute their own reactions, perspectives, or experiences in relation to a specific article or articles published in a recent issue of ELT Journal. These views are not necessarily those of the Editor, the Editorial Panel, or the Publisher. Introduction In his response to my ELT Journal Comment piece (Scheffler 2015), Jones (2015) sets out to defend ‘teaching and acquiring formulaic sequences’. However, in my view, what needs to be defended is not the use of formulaic sequences. Rather, it is systematic teaching of grammar that is in need of protection. It is this teaching that is excluded by Krashen’s approach and downgraded in Lewis’. For Krashen (for example 1982), instruction should be based on comprehensible input which triggers acquisition of structures. For Lewis (for example 1997), learners should first of all be provided with massive exposure for the acquisition of lexical chunks. That there are still prominent figures who believe that these two approaches are ‘safe to use’ by themselves is evidenced by Michael Hoey’s plenary lecture at the 2014 October IATEFL Conference in Harrogate.
