TY - JOUR AB - : This was the first meeting after the summer recess. Mr. F. W. Benum, president of the branch, introduced Dr. D. P. McIntyre of the Meteorological Service. Dr. McIntyre reviewed the ‘ parcel ’ and ‘ slice ’ methods of instability studies, the classical energyrelease computations of Margules, and the introduction of the ‘ three-dimensional ’ thermodynamic diagram by Normand to perform !he energyrelease computations by a simple volume determination on the diagram. The speaker then proceeded to derive the equations of motion from fundamental considerations of energy transfer in the atmosphere. Dr. McIntyre further applied these energy transfer considerations to the ‘ parcel ’ method of instability studies in the vertical and showed that, for the instability criterion, a solenoid term had to be taken into account in addition to the usual lapserate considerations. The vote of thanks was tendered by Mr. K. T. McLeod.
