Some of the stories told are the too familiar stories of abuse and poverty. But Lucas's story makes these dead nouns live terribly again . For instance, her father's rejection of God in the midst of poverty and death makes typical intellectual agnosticism seem indif­ ferent and removed: Then he was crying, and he was cursing God. He was saying, "Dammit, why? If we go and do our work, why do always have crumbs?" So he just cursed God. He said "Damn you, God." And he shook his fist at the sky.
