Early in his career, he was awarded the Netherlands University’s Foundation for Cooperation Fellowship for the years 1952–1954, during which he wrote his doctoral thesis on The US and the Arab World: 1945–1952 at the University of Utrecht under the supervision of Professor C. D. J. Brandt. After a brief tenure in Aligarh Muslim University, Professor Agwani joined the Indian School of International Studies in 1957 and became professor in 1965. In 1970, the Indian School of International Studies merged with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and became School of International Studies. Since then he conducted extensive research on various aspects of the modern West Asia/ Middle East. A large number of future experts and students of the region, including Professor K. R. Singh and ourself, have been his students. Through his 35-year-long career at the University, Professor Agwani served as the founder-director of the Gulf Studies Program (1978–1988), the Chairperson of the Centre TI - Professor M. S.
