Assuming that we all survived the ‘Bug’ and were not stranded in the hospital for days on end ‘hand ventilating’ intensive care patients, I suspect that you have eagerly rushed to see what is new in Anaesthesia . Initial inspection of the journal in your hand will not show anything new; the design hasn't changed and the contents remain reassuringly familiar to the reader. Why should we want to change a successful format? To quote the well‐known adage ‘if it ain't bust, don't mend it’. But equally, ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ and things must evolve. The entry into a new millennium seems a most appropriate time for us to launch a new format for the Journal; as of January 2000, we have gone ‘on line’. So what, you may ask, is so special about pasting the pages of the Journal onto a website? The answer is that the ‘on‐line’ version of the Journal is more than just an electronic copy of the paper version.
