But occasionally reduction by closed methods is unsuccessful because volar or dorsal soft-tissue structures are interposed within the joint and prevent reduction. Most of the literature on irreducible dislocation of the interphalangeal joint has been con- cerned with dorsal dislocation. The present paper describes two additional cases of irreducible volar dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the finger. CASE REPORTS Case 1. A thirty-one-year-old woman sustained a volar dislocation of the middle phalanx of the left index finger. Her left index finger was twisted by the clothes in the spin dryer of an electric washing machine. Two days later closed reduction was attempted at another hospital and failed. She was first seen eleven days after injury. Examination revealed slight swelling and tenderness of the proximal inter- phalangeal joint which was held in 67 degrees of flexion and 15 degrees of radial deviation (Fig. 1). X-rays showed radial angulation and volar dislocation TI - Irreducible Volar Dislocation of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint of the Finger JF - HAND DO - 10.1016/0072-968X_74_90017-5 DA - 1974-02-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/sage/irreducible-volar-dislocation-of-the-proximal-interphalangeal-joint-of-RsloYdJaV0 SP - 87 EP - 90 VL - 6 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
