TY - JOUR AU - Al-Hashemi, AB - Surgical drapes and gowns are manufactured specifically to meet the exacting demands of a range of procedures, providing the appropriate protection according to the type of surgical intervention, maximising clinical patient safety and user comfort. Surgical gowns and drapes are classed as medical devices and should carry the CE mark, while conforming to the European Standard EN 13795. They are bound legally by minimum standards in specific areas, such as microbial penetration, tensile strength, linting and permeability to fluids. Surgical gowns and drapes are either reusable or single-use. Surgical gowns and drapes create a sterile barrier to help prevent surgical site infections. It is vital that practitioners are aware of how to safely don the gown and handle and safely apply drapes to the patient.
