TY - JOUR AB - Moby is a software tool that can be used to extend the address space on a Lisp Machine Inc. A1 workstation. The system is called Moby and it allows addresses to be treated in what LMI describes as ‘a radically different manner’ from traditional methods. LMI says that it is now possible to establish a globally consistent address space for all Lisp machines. The initial implementation of Moby on the Lambda Lisp machine will give an address space of 2 sixty-four bit words, the ’ equivalent of two billion 500megabyte disk drives. Moby also permits the storage of active objects such as list structure, arrays and Flavor instances in files similar to present-day text files, thus eliminating the time-consuming read-in operation presently needed to activate such objects. LMI says that it sees Moby as a solution to many of the problems associated with distributed databases and redundant file systems, in overcoming network bottlenecks, and in expanding the class of problems that can be decomposed for solution by a multiprocessor system.
