TY - JOUR AU - Bouwen, Ren AB - To date, grievance research has made little useof behavioural concepts developed in the literatureon organisational conflict. Such concepts form thebasis for a model of grievance behaviour thatrelates the sources of grievances to grievanceactions and outcomes. Sources of grievanceconflict are explored by analysing interviews withBelgian and American employees concerning theircomplaints in the workplace. As an alternative tothe limiting substantive classifications traditionallyused, a categorisation of grievances is presentedthat corresponds to grievants own formulationsof the causes of conflict. Applying thiscategorisation scheme to the interview datarevealed that most grievances have multiplesources and that a grievant typically distorts publicstatements concerning the sources of thegrievance. Behavioural analysis of grievances canbenefit researcher and practitioner by providinginsight into the organisational function of conflictand into employees most basic beliefs about theirorganisations values.
