Artamonov The main components of a mechanical seal which provide reliable sealing in the rotating shaft zone are the rings of the friction couple. The service life of a mechanical seal and the degree of sealing achieved are functions of many factors and in particular of the materials of the friction couple. Work re- lated to selecting the friction couples of mechanical seals for pumps has been carried ~at in institutes and industrial plants and has provided a means of isolating a series of materials for friction couples to secure a prolonged guaranteed useful life of a mechanical seal when the requirements for mounting and operation have been fulfilled. In series production of mechanical seals the materials selection for the friction couple should take into account not only the greatest operating life but also the initial production cost and the power requirement of the friction couple during use. Comparative data are shown in Fig. 1 for the power required by a double mechanical seal (with dif- ferent friction couples) as a function of pressure in the test chamber (Fig. 2).
