TY - JOUR AU1 - Camp, R C AB - This paper reports recent investigations into a new system for use in digital magnetic recording. The new system makes use of two relatively well-known magnetic devices, the variable reluctance head and the parametron amplifier. The marriage of the unique properties of these two devices provides capabilities not possible in existing systems. The first notable application is to a system requiring low-speed reading of magnetic tape, i.e. off-line magnetic tape preparation, typewritten copy of magnetic tape computer output or magnetic tape data transmission over conventional phone lines.Another unique property of this system is that each recorded bit is interrogated, or sampled, 10 to 20 times at each reading. The redundancy which is introduced by this method offers possibilities of greatly improved reliability in tape unit design. The system is also phase rather than amplitude sensitive which offers good potential in disk file application.Further investigations into a refined thin film variable reluctance head look excellent and provide hope that this system may provide tape units with character rates approaching 10 MHz.Several possible system applications are briefly discussed in this paper. However, an entire field of applications becomes obvious once the basic concept is understood.
