AB - MULTIPLE-BEAM reflexion fringes, as developed by Tolansky1, have many advantages over the normal transmission fringes in their application to problems associated with precise measurement, and with surface structure of metal surfaces. Photographic exposure times are always much shorter in reflexion systems than in transmission systems. A disadvantage of the normal reflexion system of fringes, however, is the relatively low contrast between fringes and the background intensity. Transmission-like reflexion fringes do not have this disadvantage.
