Heist, Solomon Solis-Cohen and Myer Solis-Cohen 2 published some experimental studies on the bac tericidal action of whole fresh blood on pneumococci and described the details of a method whereby such blood is brought into contact with bacteria. In further studies, Heist and Solomon Solis-Cohen 3 deter mined that increasing the virulence of pneumococci for rabbits increases their ability to grow in rabbit blood in vitro; and that the bactericidal test on whole blood of rabbits inoculated with pneumococci is a more sensitive test for the extent of immunity present than is the agglutina tion test. Bull and Bartual ' (1920) confirmed that fact that an immunity reaction in vaccinated rabbits can be made evident by the Heist method before agglutinins or opsonins can be demonstrated in the serum. It was their opinion, however, that though in such fresh blood the TI - The action of whole fresh blood on pneumococci* JF - The Journal of Infectious Diseases DO - 10.1093/infdis/45.6.440 DA - 1929-12-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/oxford-university-press/the-action-of-whole-fresh-blood-on-pneumococci-N25iXoIJdh SP - 440 EP - 448 VL - 45 IS - 6 DP - DeepDyve ER -
