TY - JOUR AU - Flinterman, Cees AB - Part C: Appendices Draft Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women Cees Flinterman' Introduction The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women presently contains a limited supervisory mechanism: it only provides for a reporting procedure, under which States parties are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee (hereafter CEDAW) on the steps they have taken to implement the Convention. Despite the often underrated importance of the reporting procedure it is clear that more should be done to strengthen implementation of the commitment to women's equality and the human rights of women. For that reason and due to effectively organized pressure from women's organizations around the world, the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights urged the Commission on the Status of Women and the CEDAW to examine quickly the possibility of introducing the right of petition through the preparation of an optional protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Both Commissions heeded this appeal.
