TY - JOUR AU - HONGKAI, SUN AB - SUN HONGKAI 1. There are 56 nationalities in China including the Chinese. The other 55 are minorities using more than 90 languages. Most of the minorities use their own languages, except for a few such äs the Manchu and the Hui, who use Chinese. (Those who use other national languages äs well äs their own are not discussed in this paper.) Why the number of languages exceeds that of the nationalities is explained below: First, a single nationality uses several languages. This includes the following: 1. Groups of people now constituting a single nationality may hail from various historical backgrounds. After living in the same region for a long time, their national consciousness and their national characteristics have become identical. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the inhabitants of such areas are willing to be recognized äs one single nationality in spite of using different languages. For example, the Yao nationality uses three languages, which belong to different branches and different families. The Yugur use two Languages that belong to different families, and the Jingpo use two languages that belong to two different branches. 2.
