They give a well-considered and thorough exploration of personal difficulties which arise in relation to natural life events and processes. Part of the book’s appeal is that it documents how the ‘life course’, which we all experience, can give rise to personal dilemmas and challenges. It explores these as social constructs, which are both societally and historically determined. Set solely in the culture of the United States, the chapters plot progress from birth to grave, through education, marriage, parenthood, career, ageing and finally dying. Indeed the final chapter on Death and Personal History looks at how we live on after death in the memories and the symbolism of those who survive us.
