Among various kinds of preparation methods, the plasma technique has been widely used to prepare nanosize material powders because of its unique advantages. Nanosize -1 powders of carbides, nitrides, borides and oxides have been prepared by a plasma technique [1]. Ultrafine grain cemented carbides made by nanosize carbide powders have high hardness, -2 strength, toughness and wear resistance, and are widely used in industry. The key for making ultrafine ~._ hard metal is to prepare nanosize tungsten carbide powders. -~ -3 The preparation of nanosize powders of tungsten g carbide (WC) has been studied by Ronsheim and ...J coworkers using argon as the plasma working gas, with tungsten and graphite as reactants [2]. The -4 results were not ideal because of the high boiling point of tungsten. The main phase of the powders is tungsten. Most of the tungsten powders had not been evaporated and reacted.
