The subject of this notice is the latest of Arnold Berleant’s six volumes on aesthetics, Aesthetics and Environment: Variations on a Theme (hereafter A&E ). However, since A&E is in many ways Berleant’s most varied and perhaps most inclusive volume, it cannot be fully appreciated without some refer- ence to his other work. Thus, although my observations focus primarily on this most recent volume, they also bring in some aspects of his work that are more comprehensively treated in previous volumes. A&E spans much of Berleant’s philosophical career, involving two distinct parts, one that exemplifi es his well-known research on environmental aes- thetics and another that focuses on what he calls social aesthetics.
