TY - JOUR AU - Koshinuma, Masakatsu AB - In order to make clear the physical states of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) in the smectic liquid crystal phase, the repeat distance of the bilayer was measured as a function of temperature by low-angle X-ray diffraction. It was found that the repeat distance decreased with increasing temperature, and its temperature dependence was different below and above T* (= about 29 °C), which was higher than the gel-liquid crystal temperature (TM = 23.9 °C). This T* temperature was interpreted as a temperature at which the bilayer of the (Lα + H2O) phase transformed from a partly pseudostable state to a fully stable state.
