Historically, such psychological symptoms have been conceptualized limited largely to adolescents and emerging adults (Hilbert et al., 2014; Killen et al., 1996; Samuels et al., 2019; Yoon et al., 2020); however, growing research suggests that disordered eating also occurs in older adults (e.g., Fairweather‐Schmidt et al., 2015; Gagne et al., 2012; Micali et al., 2017). Furthermore, research in this domain has also been historically homogenous, overwhelmingly focusing on white women from Europe, North America, and Australia (e.g., Ball & Lee, 2002; Gadalla & Piran, 2008; Henrich et al., 2010; Pike et al., 2013; Romito et al., 2019; Sonneville & Lipson, 2018). Indeed, inclusive research is limited which undermines the generalizability of existing data to more demographically diverse populations.Disordered eating in older adultsSeveral factors uniquely contribute to disordered eating in older adults compared to their younger counterparts. For example, sociocultural factors, such as being socialized in several contexts (e.g., interactions with peers, family, and media; Thompson, Coovert, et al., 1999; Thompson, Heinberg, et al., 1999) to believe TI - Examining an integrated sociocultural and objectification model of thinness‐ and muscularity‐oriented disordered eating in Chinese older men and women JF - International Journal of Eating Disorders DO - 10.1002/eat.24017 DA - 2023-10-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/wiley/examining-an-integrated-sociocultural-and-objectification-model-of-Kf5F9S3fQn SP - 1875 EP - 1886 VL - 56 IS - 10 DP - DeepDyve ER -
