TY - JOUR AU - Lunshof, Hans AB - Geneva as a Humanitarian Capital Hans Lunshof * Head of the Liaison Service for Switzerland and Liechtenstein, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Approaching Geneva by road, one has seen for many years the sign, “Genève, carrefour international, scientifi que, humanitaire et de paix,” placed along the highway Lausanne-Geneva. I have not seen the same at the airport, nor when I travel to work every day by train. Maybe that can be fi xed quickly. As Head of UNHCR’s Liaison Service for Switzerland and Liechtenstein, with a geographical responsibility limited to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, it is only after some hesitation that I accepted the invitation to speak at this Conference that discusses topics reaching far beyond the Swiss borders. Since its creation in 1950, UNHCR has its headquarters in Geneva. Geneva is included in the Statute of the Offi ce of the High Commissioner for Refugees (Resolution 428 of the General Assembly, 14 December 1950): Article 19, “The High Commissioner will have its seat in Geneva.” The Offi ce of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has since then grown from a few staff members supporting the High Commissioner to an Offi ce with 930 staff in Geneva TI - Geneva as a Humanitarian Capital JF - Refugee Survey Quarterly DO - 10.1093/rsq/hdi0270 DA - 2007-01-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/oxford-university-press/geneva-as-a-humanitarian-capital-JwVTOr18EU SP - 100 EP - 103 VL - 26 IS - 4 DP - DeepDyve ER -
