AB - Higher Education Policy Vol. 3, No. 1, 1990 59 Ninth lAU General Conference, Helsinki, 5-11 August, 1990 Just as the Activities Report provided a detailed account of recent initiatives it is right that our readers should have an equally detailed account of the issues to be broached at the Ninth General Conference. CONFERENCE THEME The Ninth General Conference of lAU will be opened on the morning of Monday, 6August1990 in the Great Hall of the University of Helsinki. At this Inaugural Session the Director-General of Unesco, Federico Mayor, will speak, introducing the central theme of the Conference: 'Universality, Diversity, Interdependence: The Missions of the University'. Three separate topics linked to this broad theme will be discussed in Plenary Sessions and in three Parallel Commissions. They are: The mission of the university in cultural development and education: diversity within universality. The mission of the university in science and technology: discovery and application of universal knowledge within diverse social and economic systems. The mission of the university in economic development and environmental preservation: management of local and regional resources in an interdependent world system. Other practical issues of international university cooperation will be examined in workshops on the following topics: Information
