Manny, as he was called, obtained his MD from Cornell University in 1941. He began his career as an intern at New York Hospital, but early on, he developed pulmonary tu- berculosis and was treated at the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York. While there in 1947, he became Associate Director of the Trudeau Laboratory and remained for nearly a decade. In 1956, he moved permanently to Cleve- land, Ohio, where he joined the Department of Medicine at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital.
